Statement:

Painting serves as a tool to invent and build new worlds. Through painting I create visual narratives that exist as fantasy yet remain embedded in reality. These narratives can be read as allegorical and often depict the use of magic or other supernatural phenomena. RPGs like The Legend of Zelda and Elden Ring have a big influence on my work. These games reference common tropes from old myths and legends and repurpose them to relate to a modern audience. In a similar way I see painting as a space to reinterpret the past and reevaluate the future. Immersive fantasy RPGs rely heavily on the lore and world building aspect of the game to develop a deeper understanding of the motivations of the protagonist. When a player begins one of these games they take on the role of the protagonist. The player becomes both a viewer of the video game’s environment as well as an active participant in it. In my work I utilize world building as a device to create a similar kind of immersive relationship between the viewer and the painting.
